Cathedrals were way larger than castles. Cathedrals were really big buildings, and they were expensive long term building projects. The money for theses types of projects can from the many payments they made to the Roman Catholic Church. They were the sign of wealth. Your probably wondering how they were built. It was built by ,Medieval workers of course. They used to most basic tools. The architect had to find the design of the building first. Then he/she had to figure out the best highly skilled people to employ. They needed a master quarryman, sculptor, mason, blacksmith, glass maker, stone cutter, mortar maker, carpenter, and a master roofer.
What kind of tools did they use? Well I can answer that question for you. They used a pickaxe and an axe, a hammer, chisel, saw, plane, brace and bit, sledge hammer, auger, mathematical dividers, squares, and templates. Besides that Cathedrals had total control over the people. The peasants worked for free on the land. They had to pay 10% of their earnings to the Church, they made each year. This tax was called tithes. The Church didn't have to pay taxes. That is 1 of the reasons why the Church was so wealthy. Only the important cities had Cathedrals in them.
